Maqui Berry Studies and Research

Chile and Maqui BerryThe Maqui (pronounced mockee) berry is a recent discovery from the fertile Patagonia region of Chile and while a professor at the University of Chile, John Hancke, was said to discover them, the Mapuche Indians have been using this plant for centuries for a host of ailments.

Scientific research done by the University of Chile has shown the Maqui berry to reduce allergic reactions, inflammation and the aging process when taken regularly. The antioxidants in the Maqui berry also boost our immune system to fight off infection.

Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity (ORAC) is the method used to measure antioxidant capacities in different foods. This process was developed at the National Institute on Aging, in Baltimore, Maryland. There are certain berries and legumes that rate very highly using this methodology. Antioxidants reduce free radicals in the body.Maqui Berry Research

Brunswick Laboratories has a Total ORAC test which measures a food against the top 5 worst free radicals. Free radicals cause tissue breakdown that can lead to wrinkled skin and even organ failure eventually. Hydroxyl, peroxyl, peroxynitrite, singlet oxygen and superoxide anion cause oxidative stress that can lead to many health problems.

This Total ORAC test gives both the individual radical ORAC results as well as the potential performance rating of the total ORAC value of a food across the top 5 radicals. In this study, the Maqui berry has an ORAC rating of 820, which is higher than any botanical known to man!

Maqui berry ORACORAC ratings for purple fruit:

  1. Maqui berry 820.
  2. Acai berry 160-300.
  3. Blueberry 61.
  4. Raspberry 21.
  5. Grapes 14.

The Journal of Agriculture & Food Chemistry checks the antioxidant capacity of a botanical in a different way. These antioxidant measurements include:

  1. DPPH – Free radical collecting properties by the diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical.
  2. FRAP – Ferric- reducing antioxidant power.
  3. TRAP – Total radical trappic potential.
  4. TEAC – Trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity.

These antioxidant measurement techniques proved Maqui berry be to far above all other botanicals in antioxidants. Here are the results:

  DPPH ORAC FRAP TEAC
Maqui berry juice 207.1 133 55.0 127.8
Pomegranate juice 50.1 25 8.1 41.6
Red wine 35.2 25.7 4.3 18.7
Blueberry juice 20.6 20.6 4.2 15.0
Cranberry juice 19.2 15.4 2.7 10.4
Acai juice 18.3 19.5 3.8 12.8
Orange juice 12.7 7.4 1.5 4.2
Apple juice 11.8 4.8 1.2 3.6

ORAC values are for 1 ml of juice.

In a recent weight loss study, 250 men and 250 women wanted to lose from 10 to 40 pounds. They were put in 3 groups. One group was given Maqui twice a day, one group was given Acai twice a day and the third group was put on a strict diet and exercise regimen. After 6 months, while both the Maqui and Acai groups lost weight and felt better, the Maqui group lost 400% of the weight the other groups lost and most of that was just fat! Further, 80% of those in the Maqui group kept the weight off after 6 months.

In conclusion, research from various laboratories shows incredible benefits from including the Maqui berry in your diet.
